The site of one of the state's largest rescue attempts in recent history, the Quecreek Mine Rescue Memorial honors the workers who worked endlessly for five days to save the men trapped in a collapsed mine shaft 240 feet below ground. The collapse and rescue occurred in 2002, and now visitors can walk right up to the rescue shaft dug to rescue the coal miners. Visitors can also see one of the tiny rescue pods used to pull the miners to safety and a bronze statue of a miner that honors not just these men but the miners that put themselves to risk all around the world. Located just five miles north of Somerset, the memorial remains a work in progress but is worth the trip to see the site where this valiant rescue effort took place.
Open daily dawn - dusk. Visitor center hours vary, call for details.
